Anson Boon stars in MobLand, the new explosive crime-drama created by Ronan Bennett (Top Boy, The Day of the Jackal) and directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, The Gentlemen). The series follows the Harrigans, a family of British mobsters, on the brink of a gang war with an opposing family, as well as their “fixer,” played by Tom Hardy, who must clean up their mess. Played by Boon is the youngest of the Harrigan family–Eddie.

The 25-year-old actor is best known for his acclaimed portrayal of Johnny Rotten in Pistol, as well as roles in 1917 and Blackbird. Today, Anson Boon discusses fashion, his time working on MobLand, his role as Eddie Harrigan, and more!

Many of the fast-paced action sequences in MobLand are accompanied and enhanced with an exciting score/soundtrack. The pilot episode features your character Eddie in a high-intensity chase scene through a nightclub, backed by The Prodigy’s iconic 90s electronic song, “Firestarter.” Is there any music that you listened to pump yourself up for shooting your scenes?

I love how much viewers seem to be enjoying the soundtrack to our show. So many people have mentioned this to me and it’s been a lovely surprise, because when we were filming there was just so much going on that I didn’t have time to stop and think about how music might enhance what we were shooting. I remember we shot the nightclub sequence that you’re referring to on our very first week of filming, and Guy mentioned even back then that he had the idea to score it with “Firestarter” by The Prodigy. I think that’s a real testament to his brilliance and vision. I didn’t use music too much to prepare for the shoot–it was more about films. I rewatched all of Guy Ritchie’s previous pictures (hardly a chore) to soak up that unique rhythm and cadence he brings to his work.

Guy Ritchie has been delivering fun and explosive British crime dramas for decades now. Were you familiar with his work before joining the cast of MobLand?

The short answer is: absolutely! I have long admired Guy Ritchie’s work and to be honest, he is in my top three directors of all time and has been since I very first started watching films. I grew up with a dad and uncles who would always quote Snatch and revel over “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.” When I was old enough to watch them myself, I was completely hooked on Guy’s style of filmmaking. I cannot believe I am now in one!

What was it like getting to work with him?

I couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more. It was everything I wanted it to be. Being on a Guy Ritchie set is a little bit like being in the pub. It is full of characters, geezers, and everyone has a real laugh. You’re always one chat away from an anecdote off one of his regular collaborators that feels like a story straight out of one of his films. Guy has the personal essence of what he brings to his work: style, humor, swagger, wit and respectability.

Eddie is–though I’m sure he’d have some strong words to say about this–the “baby” of the Harrigan family. He’s reckless and entitled, and lives a life of luxury. He is incredibly detached from reality, but is simultaneously surrounded by danger and violence. How, as an actor, do you portray a character that–on the surface–seems very difficult to relate to?

Eddie is a total product of his environment. The words were already there on the page for me, the subject matter. It was important to recognize that, whereas the conversation around the dinner table in my real life home is usually about the weather, the Harrigans’ meal talk is guns, drugs and racketeering. Once you realize that, you play your character so that discussing those illegal enterprises is just the same as discussing the weather. My very first day of working on MobLand was going shopping in Harrods with our formidable costume designer, Rebecca Hale. This felt very much like a regular activity for Eddie (needless to say it is not for Anson!). We tried on and bought some incredibly luxurious and expensive clothes. Wearing things of that caliber immediately taught me how it must feel to be someone like Eddie. It was an invaluable day of character preparation!

Are there any characters from film or television shows that inspired or informed your portrayal of Eddie?

I never try to draw on other famous characters. I would drive myself mad trying to emulate another actor’s performance and achieve what they had already accomplished in the first place.

If you could play any other character in MobLand, who would it be, and why?

I really enjoy seeing how busy and hardworking Tom Hardy’s character, Harry Da Souza, is. He never stops working, and is so intelligent and powerful yet calm. I think that would be a fun role to juggle.

Eddie Harrigan has pretty expensive taste (God forbid he has to get rid of those fancy Italian shoes!). What are some of your favorite designer brands?

I absolutely love Casablanca at the moment. I wore their stuff so much last summer and I can’t wait to do the same this summer! I like well thought out designs. I wore Saint Laurent for this magazine shoot, and I will always be in awe of how Anthony Vaccarello has both brought YSL into a new era and dominated the space of highest luxury fashion, whilst retaining and respecting the origins of the brand from Yves Saint Laurent himself. I love Daniel Lee at Burberry–his life story and his understanding of this British brand. I’m excited to see Sarah Burton at Givenchy!

Without giving too much away, is there anything about Eddie’s storyline that you think will surprise us?

With this show, it is always wise to expect the unexpected! I am absolutely thrilled at the overall reception of the show and especially at how much people are invested in the story. I didn’t expect people to discuss and speculate on what they think will happen next! This is a testament to Paramount’s bravery with our show, in going back to the format of how great TV used to be–one episode a week. It is rarely done in this day and age of binging and constant hunger for content; but with a proper old-school, fast-paced, epic Mobster show such as MobLand, it is great that people can experience the cliffhangers in all of their glory!
