In this exciting new season of Wednesday audiences have been eager to see familiar characters evolve and new stories unfold. Among them is Tyler, played by Hunter Doohan, whose transformation from charming barista to complex villain left a lasting mark on fans in Season 1. In this interview, Hunter Doohan opens up about developing Tyler’s arc, working with creative legends like Tim Burton, and balancing his growing career in both acting and producing. He also shares insights into his additional projects, including Evil Dead and The Wilderness, while highlighting a personal cause close to his heart: supporting Project ALS.

Congratulations on Wednesday! How has the process been so far?

Thank you!! I am so glad it’s back! We all know it took a while…  We wanted to get back to it as soon as possible too! I love being a  part of this show so much. I really hope people respond well to it  and we get to continue telling the story for another season!

How did you approach developing your character, Tyler?

For me it all started with knowing what happened to him before we  meet him. He finds out he is a Hyde and so was his mother and  that’s why she’s dead. And Christina Ricci’s character convinces  him it’s the other outcast’s fault and that really gives him all of his  motivation, from the start at least.

How does Tyler develop over the course of this season? How is Tyler  different from Season 1?

Well, the secret is out! He’s no longer just the nice barista haha.  There’s a really fun dynamic between him and Wednesday with all  their history now. On top of that, Tyler has been locked away since  the end of season 1 so he is very volatile and waiting for his  chance to escape and get some revenge. I can’t spoil too much  about the rest of the season, but he has quite the journey and I feel  like you really get to see a lot of different sides of him this season.

Wednesday resurrects a familiar cast of characters. How does Tyler fit  into the series as a whole?

I feel really lucky to get to play in this iconic world. Tyler’s season  1 arc alone was so layered and fun to play with. He was  Wednesday’s love interest and a character that really got to let us  as an audience see how Wednesday navigates a love story in her  unique, twisted way. And then to have the twist of being the villain  of season 1 was everything I wanted out of it.

How do you see Wednesday as an extension of the Adams family? How  do you see it differ from the original series?

I think people respond so well to Wednesday because she’s  always been a fan favorite, but now we get to see her front and  center the whole time. Especially because Jenna is so great in this role, it’s fun getting to see her navigate the world on her own all  while keeping the undertone of that classic Addams Family humor.

How involved was Tim Burton in the development of Wednesday? Did  he contribute to how you approached creating Tyler?

Tim has been so instrumental in bringing this show to life. I  remember being so nervous because Tim was on the zoom  chemistry read I did for my final audition for season 1. I read with  Jenna for Tim and the the showrunners, Al and Miles. But he’s  always been so kind to me and collaborative. I’m so grateful to get  to work with one of my idols.

What do you want audiences to know about this season of Wednesday  before they see it?

Nothing!! I hope we can avoid any spoilers leaking. It’s such a wild  ride. I think everyone is going to love it.

While your work on Wednesday involves mystery and fantasy, your  upcoming Evil Dead film is a horror movie. Despite these differences in  genre, can you identify a throughline in your technique or performance?

No matter the genre I feel like I always approach everything the  same way. I have my long process of breaking everything down in  the script and rehearsing on my own so I can be as prepared as  possible that when I get to set I can let go, trust myself and all the  talented people around me to just play and find how to make every  scene work.

The Wilderness follows a troubled group of teenage boys in a  wilderness therapy program. What can viewers expect from the film  once it is released?

The Wilderness is such a special story. It’s based off our writer/ director’s (Spencer King) real life experience at a Troubled Teen  Industry wilderness camp. Our film follows “Ed” as he’s ripped out  of his bed in the middle of the night and sent to one of these  camps. It has a really deep personal story while also exploring this  sometimes overlooked issue of what can go terribly wrong in  these programs that don’t have the proper oversight or protection  for these kids.

For The Wilderness you work as an actor and producer in tandem.  What is it like to balance these different roles?

Working as a producer on this film was a dream come true. I love  indie film and to get to be so involved from script, to casting, to  the edit was so exciting for me. I got to work with Aaron Paul  again, who I adore, and the super talented Amy Berg. I learned so  much.

The film is obviously tackling serious subject matter, but we also  had a great time on set. I got to work with friends (Aaron Holliday,  Arie Thompson and Liana Liberato) a who are incredible actors  I’ve been dying to work with. As well as getting to reconnect and  work with the Lamar Johnson again, who was in Your Honor with  me. He is unbelievable in this film. Our whole cast is truly  incredible. We really lucked out to have such amazing actors who  are also great people to be around 12 hours a day out in the Utah  desert.

Can you tell us more about Project ALS? How can people get involved?

Thank you for asking about this! Project ALS is an amazing  organization that helps fund the most promising research and  development for effective treatments and hopefully one day a cure  for ALS. I lost my dad to ALS in 2017 so I try to support however I  can. People can also visit projectALS.org to find ways to give or  get involved!
