Creative Director Deborah Ferguson

At just fifteen years old, Izzy G. has made herself the next actress to watch for her stellar performance in Hulu’s hit limited series Under The Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s novel of the same name depicting the real-life tragedy of Reena Virk–a troubled teenage girl in British Columbia who was murdered by her classmates–Izzy G. stars as Kelly, one of the young suspects under investigation, alongside Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone. In this interview, Izzy G. sits down to discuss the process of working on a true-crime series, her experience as a teenage actress, and more!

Are you a fan of true crime?

I am interested in true crime–more so for the psychological element of it.

What was it like being transported back to the 90s for your role?

I think at heart I’m a big 90’s girl. The music, the fashion, the cars…I love the 90s, so to be in it wasn’t that big of a change for me! But I will say, I totally wouldn’t have been able to do it without the brilliant writing and directing and our amazing crew; props, costumes, set decoration, hair, makeup, and even more beautiful and amazing people that brought their creative genius to the project…even craft and catering were fantastic! They really did create the feel of the show and added the energy that I, as an actor, could use to portray my character.

Was it ever difficult stepping into a character so unlike yourself?

Of course, it was. It was intimidating and scary. But for me, having such a close relationship to the story and having the connection I had to it, I knew that if I was going to do this–be Kelly–I was gonna give it everything I had.

Is there any pressure or difficulty involved in honoring real-life tragedy like the one in Under The Bridge

Absolutely, yes! I think for me it is a bit nerve-racking when doing these interviews because I never want to say anything disrespectful. It was such a heartbreaking tragedy and with such a controversial story, all I want to do is be respectful to the people who have gone through what Reena has gone through or are going through it now. And most importantly, respectful of Reena’s family who live with the loss of her. Every. Single. Day. My heart is forever with them.

Did you learn anything getting to work alongside powerhouses such as Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone?

I’ve learned so much from Riley and Lily on this set. We didn’t have much time together, as we didn’t have many scenes together, but when we were working together…Phew! Those people are total bosses! I’ve really learned from them how to hold myself as a person, the poise and the elegance that they both carry is something that I want to have for the rest of my life.

What experience did you gain in Under The Bridge that you hope to carry onto future projects?

I don’t know yet. I think I’ll know on the next project. That’s what it was like for me on AJ and the Queen. I never knew what I learned from that show until I started applying it to different characters on different projects.

You have a career spanning almost 10 years now! How do you find time to be a normal teenager in between projects, and what keeps you grounded?

Almost 10 years!? Oh my goodness. Wow. Well, it definitely is difficult trying to be a teenager while also being an actor. I’m not a method actor but I am definitely someone who puts all her time and effort into a project, which can make it difficult to have time for myself. But, I think you have to find the time. Even now with everything going on careerwise, I find time to hang out with my friends. And it really is my family that keeps me grounded–spending time with the ones I love.

What do you have planned for the future?

To be honest, I have no clue what tomorrow will look like, so right now I’m just taking it step by step. There’s so many people I hope to work with! But I do hope, in the near future, to work with Damien Chazelle (Babylon, Whiplash, La La Land).  I was raised in Louisiana so jazz and music in general are a really big part of my life–and obviously his genius storytelling. It would be an honor to work with him.
