Starring in the 2025 Critics Choice nominated St. Denis Medical, Kahyun Kim has charmed viewers nationwide. Her career began when she studied theater at Juilliard, and she later landed a role on Disney’s Austin and Ally. Since then, Kim has developed an impressive body of work featuring roles in American Gods and Cocaine Bear. Her versatile repertoire has shown her range as a performer, and her latest role on St. Denis Medical has captured her vibrant personality.

LG: Congratulations on St. Denis Medical! How has the experience been so far?
KK: Thank you! It’s the best. I truly am the luckiest person in the world. I get to work on a show that I love with people that I love! What more can I ask for?

LG: The show adopts a mockumentary format in its filming. How do you think this influenced the show as a whole?
KK: I think it keeps the show very real and grounded, even in absurd situations, which makes it even funnier because it’s so relatable. Also, you get a chance to really get to know the characters and get a peek into their inner thoughts.

LG: Mockumentary often provides further insight into characters as individuals. How did you use this format to develop your character, Serena?
KK: Yes! That is truly the best and my favorite part of living in the mockumentary world. You get to break the fourth wall and express what you really think inside. It creates such a bond with the audience. Especially for Serena, she wears her emotions on her face and does not shy away from telling you how she feels, so having those moments looking into the camera really gives you an insight to who she is and what she’s thinking.

LG: Serena simultaneously explores her career as well as her personal identity. In what ways do you see yourself in Serena?
KK: I mean she humps a desk in the first episode and when I read that in the pilot script I said “well, they obviously wrote Serena based on me!” I love Serena. I think she is very close to who I am in real life because I too cannot hide my emotions and tend to say whatever’s on my mind. She’s had a wild life before, I imagine, and now she’s settled in a small town hospital in Oregon discovering adulting and finding real genuine connections with her people. It’s all part of growing up and I am growing up with her in my real life, which is really cool.

LG: You got your start in the Disney universe, but your contemporary work has much distance from that. How do you compare these two experiences? How has your time at Disney informed the work you produce now?
KK: Disney is where I got my career started. I loved being on Austin and Ally. I had just graduated from Juilliard and because I’m Asian with great skin, I got to play high school for a very long time. I was finding my footing in TV. I was still used to theatre acting and I think being on a Disney Channel show really helped me translate my theatre background into television acting. It was a blast. And Freaky Friday was so much fun because I got to not only be in a Disney film but also a musical, which has been a childhood dream of mine.

LG: You moved from South Korea to study acting at Juilliard. What was it like to move across the world at such a young age?
KK: I’m not going to lie, it was terrifying. I barely spoke English and it was my first time away from my family. I hadn’t done any acting in Korea, but by some miracle I got into Juilliard and had to move to NYC. It was thrilling and scary at the same time.

LG: How has your Juilliard training developed your approach to acting?
KK: I mean, it taught me everything: technique, endurance, and work ethic. It not only taught me how to become an actor, but it shaped me into who I am as a person. My classmates, about 18 of them, and I grew up together. They really molded me into who I am. I am very grateful for them and they will always be family to me.

LG: The Neil Gaiman universe boasts works like Coraline and Lucifer, and you joined it while working on American Gods. What was it like to portray New Media?
KK: That was a special one. I was already a big fan of Neil Gaiman, so being a part of that world was surreal. I truly got to have the best of both worlds. New Media was a new version of Media from the book (and was so wonderfully portrayed by Gillian Anderson in Season 1). So I got to have a great jumping board from Neil’s amazing character, but also got to develop it and give it my own spin.

LG: How do you think her character reflects contemporary shifts in media trends today?
KK: It’s crazy how fast everything develops. That show was shot seven years ago and media trends have already changed so much. At the time, Instagram and Twitter were very much at the forefront of social media, so that’s what New Media reflected. But now there’s Tiktok and probably other platforms that I’m not even aware of! I think her fast paced nature and character development represents that throughout the show.

LG: While your work on American Gods commented on attitudes in current society, your work on Cocaine Bear focused on a real story. What was it like to work on that project?
KK: Okay COCAINE BEAR! Truly a dream come true. One of my favorite movies to this date is 22 Jump Street. I am obsessed with that movie. And one of my career goals was to work with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and honestly, it came true faster than I expected. Filming, especially during Covid, in Ireland was such a dream. Elizabeth Banks is a powerhouse. I made great friends and I’m probably biased, but the ambulance scene is truly chef’s kiss. And I got to wear a scandalous red carpet outfit for the premiere, which is still one of my favorites that I’ve worn. I mean how many actors can say they were in a movie with a coked-up bear? I am a very lucky gal.

LG: Your work extends into the personal through your role in A Family Guide to Hunting. How did you relate to your character in that film? What similarities and differences did you share?
KK: I am a Korean girl dating a white boyfriend! I probably won’t ever volunteer to go hunting, but I can definitely relate to trying to bridge the gap between your very Korean parents and your American boyfriend. My family loves my boyfriend, thankfully, but there’s still cultural differences that I have to translate at times.

LG: You’ve worked across multiple mediums and genres. What type of project would you. like to work on next?
KK: I would love to work on a Korean project, whether that means Korea/America co-productions or straight up going back to Korea for a couple of months and doing a K-Drama or movie. There are so many Korean directors and actors I’m dying to work with, so I’m putting that out in the universe! I’d also love to go back to my theatre roots and do a play. I haven’t been back to New York City for work in a hot second, and there’s nothing like doing a play in NYC.
