Saagar Shaikh stars in Hulu’s newest action-comedy, Deli Boys. The charming and absurdly funny series created by Abdullah Saeed follows a mismatched pair of brothers as they become thrown into the secret criminal underworld of their father’s company following his unexpected death. Accompanied by a quick-witted script and incredible ensemble cast, Shaikh delivers a hilarious and charismatic performance in his first starring role as the “Type-B” half of the sibling duo, Raj.
Today, Shaikh discusses the filming of Deli Boys, the dynamic between Raj and his brother Mir (Asif Ali), and his experience in Hollywood as a South Asian-American actor.

First things first, congrats! Deli Boys has had an overwhelmingly positive audience response and is Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes! What has life been like post-release of Deli Boys Season One?
Oh man, thank you so much! It has truly been an overwhelming last few weeks and while I was hoping to get a positive reaction, I truly didn’t expect it to be this big. My life has changed so much since the show came out. I was in NYC when it came out on March 6th and immediately went to Austin for SXSW right after. The difference between walking down the street on March 5th and March 6th is truly wild. I love meeting the fans.
If you could invent your own tacky convenience store item, what would it be?
The Mega Glug is a top tier tacky item. I don’t know if I could top that, but what if there was a vape that’s also a functioning straw so you can hydrate while you’re smoking? I don’t know–I’ll leave the good ideas to the writers!

Deli Boys doesn’t need to slowly ease its audience in; the bizarrely funny cold-open and the insanity that occurs in the rest of the pilot grabs them right off the bat. When you were first reading the script, what was your reaction like? Did you have any idea where things were going to go?
I remember the first time I read it, I was like, “Wow,” and then went back to page one and started reading it again. I think I read it four times that day. I was in love with every word on every page and I knew I needed to be a part of this show in any capacity. I could’ve never predicted that I would be playing one of the two leads; I’m still not sure if this is real or not!
You star in Deli Boys alongside Asif Ali, who plays your character’s brother. What was it like getting to develop their awesome sibling connection?
It was honestly VERY easy with Asif–he’s such a good energy–and the fact that he and I are on the same page about our passion for this show and our mutual willingness to go above and beyond everyone’s expectations with every aspect of the show to make sure people watch it and love it…It’s made us a lot closer. We go shopping together now, which he hates, and I love.

Speaking of the brothers, one could say they have a very Left-Brain versus Right-Brain dynamic. What aspects of each character do you see yourself in? Is there one you identify with more than the other?
This is a good question. I think I have been versions of both at different times in my life. I’ve been the guy that wants to make his parents proud: I have a Bachelor’s degree in business management that I constantly remind people of when I’m pitching an idea and want them to trust me even though it hardly works. But, I have also been the guy that just wants to enjoy the fruits of my parents’ labor. They worked hard so I don’t have to! But also, my dad isn’t rich, so I didn’t really have the fruits to enjoy; I just liked to party.
If you could compare Raj and Mir to another iconic duo, who would they be?
They are so Will and Carlton coded, and I didn’t even realize that until after I watched it for the first time. It’s like if Will Smith and Kendall Roy had a baby, you’d get Raj, and if Carlton Banks and Roman Roy had a baby, you’d get Mir.

South Asian-Americans are a greatly under-represented population in television and film, especially in starring roles. How does it feel to stand among the small amount of South Asian leads in Western media?
It’s wild because we are literally about 25% of the world’s population but American TV will have you believing we’re a minority. I’m happy to be where I am, but it’s lonely over here. We need more!
Lastly, you have a local deli you’d like to shout out?
Shout out to J.W. Hope on School and Main in Boerne, TX!
