Spring may have just started, but things are really heating up for our guests at the White Lotus Resort in Thailand–especially the Ratliffs. The third season of Max’s hit drama series The White Lotus introduces the Southern family of five as they endure Mike White’s newest recipe for disaster, complete with some odd massages, awkward boat rides, an overload of Lorazepam, and some good ol’ brotherly love. Standing out among the chaos is Piper, who hopes to reach some spiritual enlightenment (and maybe an escape from her relatives) during her tropical vacation.

Playing the black sheep of the Ratliff family is Sarah Catherine Hook. The actress is best known for her work in Amazon’s Cruel Intentions (2024) and Netflix’s First Kill, as well as her ongoing collaborations with Chanel. Today, Hook meets with us to discuss Piper’s journey throughout the season so far, as well as her time on set filming The White Lotus.

The Ratliffs are a product of Southern generational wealth, and proud of it, and their comfortability often stretches into inconsideration to the world outside of their Durham bubble. As someone who grew up in the South, did you ever encounter people/families like this? If so, how did those experiences help you translate the Ratliff family dynamic from script-to-screen?

What’s on the page is just that—her family is loud, a little embarrassing at times, and behaves in a way that makes her shudder. It didn’t take much “channeling” from personal experience, although I think it’s safe to say we’ve all felt at least a little embarrassed by our loved ones or where we come from.

Your character Piper, as we’re beginning to learn, is often pushed aside as a quiet observer of the toxicity within the Ratliff family, and tries her best to subtly dismantle the weaponized masculinity that is seemingly being passed down through generations, mainly focusing on protecting and guiding her younger brother to independence. How do you portray a character that is more reserved in comparison to her boisterous and obnoxious family, while still standing out in the larger narrative of the story?

Beautiful question, and thank you for recognizing the challenge! My number one priority in this job was to play the truth—to play what Mike wanted. I aimed to be a soft lump of clay, letting him mold me into whatever he envisioned that day. That was my job and purpose at The White Lotus.

I think the reason her story stands out amid the chaos of these crazy characters is solely because Mike is an exceptional storyteller—someone who can turn even the most mundane, the most ordinary, into something thrilling and delightful.

In a recent interview with Contents Man magazine , your co-star Jason Isaacs, who plays Piper’s father Timothy, described his experience shooting in Thailand as “stupidly, skin-crispingly, lung-burstingly, tooth-meltingly hot.” Do you share a similar sentiment about your time in Thailand?

This is the most Jason response ever….But yes, he’s spot on.

Speaking of the heat, what products did you use during your time in Thailand to protect your skin from the sun?

Any sunscreen I could find. I had a weekly raiding of the sunscreen box in the makeup department.

The Ratliff family is made up of your character, Piper, her two brothers Lochlan (Sam Nivola) and Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), and her parents Timothy (Jason Isaacs) and Victoria (Parker Posey). What was it like to work closely with this talented group of actors?

I’ll get specific with you and go down the list because I’m on a train right now and have the time:

Mike would always say to Jason, “You’re so facile,” and I understood exactly what he meant: Jason effortlessly and naturally packed a punch in every scene, every take. He is flexible, selfless, and always keeps the energy up (even when playing someone completely drugged out). I genuinely think he’s one of the greatest actors of our time.

Parker is everything you’d imagine and more. Her uniqueness and singularity seep through every take, every conversation, every encounter—there is no one like Parker Posey.

Patrick was, and still is, the one who astounds us the most every time. In real life, he’s relaxed, easygoing, and lovable, but he completely transformed into Saxon, building a fully realized character—all while laughing and having fun.

Sam Nivola might be the most special boy in the whole wide world. It’s impossible not to love him, and the amount of talent and wisdom packed into that kid shouldn’t even be allowed!

Clearly, I adore and admire them all.

Piper is easily the most likeable character in the Ratliff family. She’s smart, independent, and stands up for what’s right. Do you see any of yourself in her characterization? If so, did that help you in your portrayal of her?

I do! So much so that when I received the audition for this, I felt very strongly that I was this girl. I couldn’t explain it, but with each callback, the stars seemed to align. The more I got to know her, the more I felt a kindred connection to her.

What was it like working with creator of the series Mike White?

Working with Mike was pretty different from what I imagined. I expected him to be this dark, mysterious, enigmatic presence who wanted to have deep philosophical discussions about the characters. But in reality, he just wanted to chat and make us laugh—which he definitely succeeded at!! He is a brilliant, beautiful little freak of nature, and I am forever grateful to know him!

How do you hope audiences respond to Piper’s personal journey in Season Three of The White Lotus?

I don’t think I hope for anything specific – people will take what they need from each character and if something in Piper resonates with you (good or bad), I’m here for it!
