Sofia Boutella is a name synonymous with versatility, elegance, and unrelenting passion. She first captivated the world with her spellbinding dance moves, famously partnering with global icons like Madonna and Michael Jackson. But Sofia’s journey didn’t stop on the dance floor. With a natural ability to transcend boundaries, she made a seamless leap into acting, quickly carving a niche in Hollywood. Her breakout role as the blade-legged assassin Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service showcased her athletic prowess and charisma. Since then, she’s taken on diverse roles, from a fearsome alien warrior in Star Trek Beyond to the titular ancient queen in The Mummy, and as Eve Mansour in Rogue Heroes.

Congratulations on Rogue Heroes! How has the process been so far?
I absolutely love being part of SAS Rogue Heroes and playing Eve Mansour. The journey so far has been incredible. Starting in the desert during series one, especially during Covid, was intense—I think the harshness of the weather and the isolation really brought us all closer together as a cast. And everyone is truly phenomenal in the show. Their performances are so strong, and it’s such a joy and honor for me to work alongside them.
What makes this project even more special for me is that it’s rooted in a real-life story. I feel so humbled to be part of a show that honors the bravery of the SAS and their incredible accomplishments during World War II. It’s also an honor for me to play Eve Mansour, a fictional character who represents the many courageous women who helped fight for liberation during the war. Being part of this story is truly a privilege, and I’m so proud to share it with audiences.
What similarities do you see between yourself and your character?
I think one similarity I see between myself and Eve Mansour is resilience. She has this incredible ability to push forward, no matter the challenges she faces, and that’s something I really connect with. I recognize the importance of staying motivated and driven, even in the toughest circumstances, and I feel that same determination is a key part of who Eve is. She’s focused, resourceful, and unwavering in her mission, which I find deeply inspiring.
How did you approach developing Eve as a character?
Developing Eve Mansour was a deeply engaging process. I drew inspiration from historical accounts of women who, during World War II, leveraged their femininity and charm to operate as spies, often going unnoticed by the enemy. I wanted Eve to embody this elegance—confident, witty, and fully in command of her presence. By portraying her as both alluring and sharp, I aimed to reflect the real-life strategies employed by female operatives who used societal perceptions to their advantage. This approach allowed me to create a character that is both captivating and a tribute to the ingenious women who played pivotal roles in the war effort.
In portraying Eve, I wanted to honor these remarkable women by capturing their resilience, intelligence, and the unique methods they employed in their courageous endeavors.
How does Eve develop over the course of the show?
As the show develops, you can really feel the weight of the war pressing down on Eve. She’s someone who is deeply invested in the mission, but the toll of the war becomes increasingly apparent. Of course, she misses David Stirling, and that longing adds a layer of emotional complexity to her character. But as she grows closer to the SAS and becomes more entrenched in their world, the brutal realities of their fight start to take a visible toll on her.

What was the filming process like?
The filming process was an absolute joy. There was such a strong sense of camaraderie on set, and it felt like everyone involved cared deeply about bringing this story to life. From our incredible director, Stephen Woolfenden, to our meticulous military consultant, Bags Simmons, to the talented hair and makeup team, the highly detailed costume department, the deeply engaged producers—and last but not least, our exceptional crew—everyone was so dedicated and gifted. Each person brought something unique to the table, and their passion and presence made the experience unforgettable. It was such a privilege to work with such a caring and talented team.

How has the series evolved from its first season to the latest installment?
The series evolved significantly from its first season, which focused on the formation of the SAS in North Africa, to its second season, set in Europe during the invasion of Sicily and Italy. With David Stirling captured, leadership shifts to Paddy Mayne, adding new challenges and dynamics. The second season explores the psychological toll of war, introduces new characters, and deepens the complexity of existing ones, showcasing the broader contributions to the war effort while maintaining the series’ bold, action-driven storytelling.

The series adapts Ben Macintyre’s novel of the same name. What aspects did you aim to maintain in the television adaptation?
Rogue Heroes, created by Steven Knight, adapts Ben Macintyre’s book Rogue Warriors to depict the origins and daring exploits of the SAS during World War II. The series remains true to the historical accuracy and spirit of Macintyre’s work, while exploring the complex personalities of figures like David Stirling and Paddy Mayne. To enrich the story, the series introduces fictional elements, including my character, Eve Mansour. While not part of the book or based on a real person, Eve represents the courageous women, such as those in the Special Operations Executive (SOE), who played vital roles in espionage and resistance. Inspired by figures like Noor Inayat Khan and Virginia Hall, Eve embodies the bravery and contributions of these remarkable heroines. She reflects the spirit of the women who helped shape history during World War II, adding a powerful and historically grounded layer to the narrative.

You have extensive experience in the action genre, but this series has a more historical dimension. How has your past work influenced your approach to this series?
Being part of SAS: Rogue Heroes is incredibly meaningful to me. While I’ve had the privilege of being part of many action films—which I truly love and enjoy doing—my focus has never been solely on the genre. What drives me as an actor is exploring rich, multidimensional characters and stories that delve into their complexities. I love the process so much and I want to do a good job.
What do you want viewers to know before they start the show?
I suppose I’d love for viewers to know just how much heart and dedication went into creating this show. Everyone involved cared deeply about this project, from the cast to the crew, and we all poured so much love into bringing this incredible story to life. I truly hope viewers can feel that passion and experience the show in the best possible way—it means so much to all of us.

What other genres are you interested in exploring?
I’m open to exploring anything, really. As an artist and actor, I’m always eager to deepen my craft and expand my capabilities. I’m not sure what the future holds, and that’s the unpredictable but also quite exciting part of this job. Ultimately, I want to continue exploring, reading inspiring stories, and playing characters that move me. I’m drawn to roles that inspire me to do my best work and that challenge me creatively.
