The highly anticipated second season of Hulu’s hit romantic-drama Tell Me Lies (2022) introduced beloved actor and swoon-worthy Scot, Thomas Doherty, as the new love-interest for Grace Van Patten’s Lucy Albright. In a thrilling and steamy eight-episode installment, Doherty’s Leo connects with Lucy after the fallout from her toxic relationship with Stephen, but has a dark past of his own that the two must reconcile with. The Descendants and Gossip Girl (2021) actor is as charming as ever, while offering moments of sensitivity and vulnerability amidst the series’ usual calamity. Today, Doherty discusses his experience filming Tell Me Lies and his ongoing ambassadorship with Dior.

Your most recent project is Season 2 of Hulu’s hit series Tell Me Lies! What was it like getting to join the show for its second season? Were you familiar with it beforehand?

Joining a new cast, especially one that’s already well established is daunting to some extent. But I was welcomed with open arms by everyone and settled comfortably in pretty quickly. They’re all wonderful actors, but most importantly really good people who take their work very seriously but not life, which creates a really fun environment to work in while also creating. I did watch season 1 and thought it was shot beautifully, the writing was exceptional, and the show had gathered a really strong ensemble of great actors. Stress inducing to watch certainly, but worth it
for the ride.

Tell Me Lies surrounds one couple’s toxic and tumultuous relationship over the span of eight years. In the spirit of crazy dating stories, what are some of your dating red flags?

I’ve been pretty lucky with dating people. I’ve actually been in relationships most of my young life, so I’ve managed to steer clear of any entertaining dating anecdotes. Maybe I’ll have a fun answer next time.

In the most spoiler-free way you can, is there anything about your role in Tell Me Lies that
you think will take audiences by surprise? (More than we’ve already been…)

I think Leo is pretty open and transparent throughout the series, and the audience is already aware of his personality dysfunctions. The question is: Is he able to maintain control over himself?

Outside of acting, you’ve had an ongoing ambassadorship with Dior for a few years now, modeling in campaigns and even being styled by them for the Met Gala! What’s been the best part of working with them so far?

I really love working with the brand. Apart from all the products I get to use (my bathroom looks like a Dior showroom), and being able to work with people like Kim Jones; the culture at the company that has been curated is something very special. They’re incredibly warm and personal,
with a genuine interest in me as a person and my career, and I’ve made some really special relationships as a result. I love working with them and hope to continue my relationship with them for a long time. It’s great when I get to work with a brand that I have a genuine love for. It’s never a bad thing to have Dior in your Rolodex when you need a carpet or event look last
minute.

Has your relationship with self-care and fashion changed at all since you started working with them?

Definitely. I have a much greater understanding of self care and beauty products. Not only do I have access to them, but I also learn about them, what they do and how to use them (which I never realized was that important) Being an ambassador, I’m offered a much more extensive looking into how the products are made, which is why, like I said before, my bathroom looks like a Dior beauty showroom. The shaving foam and the whole prestige line are my go to’s right now. In terms of fashion, I feel like it’s a constantly developing form of self expression, and having Kim Jones as someone to be inspired by and model after has also given me a much vaster appreciation of fashion, and a genuine interest.

How would you describe your sense of style?

I don’t think it’s one thing exclusively, and I’m working with a wonderful new stylist Bailey Moon to cultivate and hone in on a much more consistent and cohesive through line in how I present myself in the world which has been a really fun experience. But when I’m running an errand or kicking about with friends playing pool or whatever, it’s sweats and jeans.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

I feel like I’m at a big turning point in my career and in my life. A lot of big changes, and I’m really excited to keep moving forward with the wonderful team I have, the exceptional people I have in my life, and the love for what I get to do. There’s an expression my grandmother used to say: “What’s for you, won’t go by you. And what goes by you, wasn’t for you.” I keep that in
mind.
